How Do I Qualify for Ketamine Therapy Group?

Medical and Psychological appropriateness for group Ketamine Therapy can only be assessed via a thorough evaluation with Dr Tejinderpal (TJ) Rai, MD, holistic psychiatrist specializing in psychedelic ketamine therapy. A current active patient of Dr Rai may only need brief 30-minute appointment to assess appropriateness for group rather than full evaluation. You may get reimbursement from your health insurance company for part of the cost by submitting invoices as a claim to your insurance company. For details please click to visit the Fees Page here.

 Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a medicine that can be considered plant medicine as it is produced by mycelium (Pochonia chlamydosporia), though ketamine that is widely used in created in lab rather than derived from mycelium. Ketamine has been used widely as a safe and effective dissociative anesthetic for adults, teens, children and even infants since it was first synthesized in 1962 and received FDA approval in 1970. Ketamine is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Antidepressant effect of Ketamine has been studied since the year 2000 by psychiatrists due to its ability to rapidly alleviate symptoms of depression in patients through intravenous infusion, and in 2018 FDA approved Esketamine (Spravato), a derivative of ketamine for intranasal use in treatment for Major Depression.

Is Psychedelic dose of Ketamine Safe?

Psychedelic Ketamine Therapy is safe with appropriate selection, preparation and safeguards in a monitored situation like we provide. In fact, the FDA-approved use of Ketamine as anesthetic in adults as well as teens, children, and even infants is at doses that are twice or more than the doses used for psychedelic journey in mg/kg of body weight. The goal of psychedelic experience is to allow one to get in touch with pure consciousness while dissociating from one’s body, rather than taking such a large dose as to become anesthetized and unconscious.

What does Psychedelic dose of Ketamine do?

When taken as orally dissolvable tablets in a dose optimized for each individual, Ketamine can lead to intense dissociation from the body so you can take a journey into your mind for a 1.5-2 hour long awake-dreaming experience, during which you can access material buried in your mind that might not otherwise be accessible during ordinary waking consciousness. Psychedelic dose of Ketamine disrupts your brain’s default mode network, which is your usual way of thinking and perceiving. The Non-Ordinary State of Consciousness (NOSC) created by this disruption can activate your body’s natural healing intelligence, allowing you to look at yourself, others and the world in a very different way. Research has shown that psychedelics can facilitate Neuroplasticity, the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization. In other words, the brain is rewired to function in a way that differs from how it previously functioned. For more details see article in the journal Science linked here.

What is the benefit of Psychotherapy paired with my psychedelic journey?

Group and individual psychotherapy before and after ketamine journey can enable one to integrate into one’s waking conscious mind the fresh perspectives obtained during Ketamine journey, resulting personal transformation and a level of emotional wellness not possible through routine psychotherapy, although results cannot be guaranteed. If the neurobiological effect of a psychedelic substance alone led to personal transformation, then all the club kids partying on Ketamine or Magic Mushrooms (Psilocybin) or Molly/Ecstasy (MDMA) would have as much emotional growth and maturity as that shown in research studies of guided Psychedelic experiences.

What are the Advantages of Group vs Individual Journey?

Feeling a sense of belonging in a group that feels safe and supportive even when we share parts of ourselves that we believe are flawed, or not enough, or too much…that can be a mind-altering psychedelic experience alone, even without medicine. Adding music specific for psychedelic journeys, as well as breathwork & Ketamine enhance that heart-opening sense of belonging and feeling compassionate love for ourselves and others even more.

What is the benefit of music specific for Psychedelic journeys?

Sound bath paired with breathwork can be a rewarding way of reducing anxiety, soothing your nervous system, and raising conscious awareness of mind-body without thinking. Certain sound frequencies can balance and harmonize the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of the whole person. Also, as with other psychedelics, the mindset one is in and the setting (commonly called set and setting) that Ketamine is administered in influence the experience greatly. Music is an essential part of the setting, because for instance, do you think your favorite movie would be the same without its musical score that sets the emotional tone for various scenes?

Why not do Ketamine on my own at home?

Intense disconnection from the body due to taking Psychedelic Ketamine dose can lead to ego-dissolution, also called near-death experience. While this intense dissociation from one’s body is essential for the transformative Psychedelic effect (and cannot be achieved through “micro-dosing”), it can also be scary as it feels like dying, and one can become very afraid of getting stuck in this altered state of mind (Non-Ordinary Consciousness). Thus, Psychedelic Facilitation plays a crucial role in supporting the safe and healthy unfolding of a psychedelic experience. Psychedelic Facilitator is a humble, empathetic, trusted individual who attends to the immediate physical and environmental needs of a person during a psychedelic journey. Facilitator also supports the emotional needs of the journeyer, such as holding space for the journeyer to cry or yell or express other emotion, and does not guide, lead or provide therapy during the journey.

What is the Cost of Group Ketamine Therapy?

$650 covers cost for Breathwork, & psychedelic Ketamine journey in heart-centered group facilitated by holistic psychiatrist Dr TJ Rai, MD.

The only additional cost is evaluation with Dr Rai (as mentioned above), as well as the cost of your ride home after Ketamine journey during second event, if you cannot arrange a free ride, as you will be unfit to drive back home that day.

Why is Breathwork required before group ketamine?

Breathwork is pre-requisite for ketamine group because journeying into your mind with ketamine in group setting feels safer when doing it with those who attended the preceding Breathwork group without any medicine. Immediately following your psychedelic Ketamine experience of a deeper Non-Ordinary State of Consciousness, sharing your experience with your newfound community of fellow journeyers in group facilitated by your psychiatrist can lead to increased potential for learning. As Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, “Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.”
